700 year old willow
The most famous attraction of the Altyn-Emel National Park.
It is located between the mountains Big and Small Kalkan, the dune has a length of about two kilometers. The height, according to official data, reaches 150 meters. From the height of the Singing Dune, a view of the valley of the Ili River opens.

The approximate age of the Singing Dune is 8 thousand years. But what is interesting is that, unlike other dunes, it has not changed its shape and location for several millennia. It was named so due to the fact that in dry weather the sands make sounds that are similar to the melody of an organ.
If for some reason the dune does not make a sound, then catch a life hack: you need to slide or run down it from top to bottom and then you will certainly hear his voice.
Katutau - volcanic mountains. They are also called Dead, Harsh or Empty Mountains. Volcanic mountains located in the center
national park. The main rock is lava erupted from ancient volcanoes. In the distant past, on the border of the Paleozoic and Mesozoic, there were two volcanoes in this place, which were part of the volcanic belt, the remains of which have been preserved in the eastern part of modern Kazakhstan. These are, for example, the Buguty mountains,
Bektau-ata, Karkaralinsk and others. According to scientists, volcanoes were located here 240 million years ago.
They are located on the road to the Singing Dune. They are several vertically installed stones about two meters high. According to legend, the stones were piled up by the subjects of Genghis Khan for cooking, when in 1219 he came to these parts with an army.
However, there is a less interesting version of the appearance of stones - they served as signal towers, on which fires were kindled when enemies appeared. The smoke from the fires was visible at a great distance. And there are many such structures in our region.
The Aktau Mountains are nothing more than the former bottom of an ancient sea that filled most of Kazakhstan 30-50 million years ago. In the Cretaceous deposits of the mountains, a lot of fossilized remains of ancient animals were found: crocodiles, turtles, giant rhinos, primitive predators. At the moment they are stored in the Museum of Kazakhstan.
On the cordon "Kokbastau", located on the plain between the mountains of Big Kalkan and Katutau, the largest and oldest willow grows.
Biologists suggest that the tree is 700 years old. Over the centuries, the willow has grown to gigantic proportions. It takes several
Human. By the way, according to legend, Genghis Khan himself rested under it after campaigns.
