Big Almaty Lake - the pearl of the Zailiysky Alatau. The lake is located in the mountains at an altitude of 2511 m, the length of the lake is 1.5 km, and the depth reaches 40 m. Since this is an alpine lake, the water temperature in it, even in summer, is no more than 10 degrees.
The Big Almaty Lake was formed due to a strong earthquake, more than 3 thousand years ago.
Now it serves as a source of water for the city of Almaty, so there is a water protection zone here. A little higher than the lake on the Zhosaly Kezen pass is the Tien Shan high-mountain scientific observatory and the Cosmostation.
The lake, like a shimmering mirror, lies in a gorge and is surrounded by majestic mountain peaks. Such as Sovetov Peak (4,317 m), Ozerny Peak (4,110 m), and Tourists Peak (3,954 m). To the west of the Peak of Tourists is the Big Almaty Peak. The height of this tall mountain pyramid is 3,681 m. Its peak is constantly visible from the city.
The lower waterfall is 6 meters high. Before it, we will walk through a beautiful forest gorge. Ayusai Gorge is interesting for its three waterfalls.
Translated from the Kazakh language, Ayusay is translated as "Bear Gorge", or "Bear Log" because of the Tien Shan brown bears that once lived here. And in 1970-1990, the snow leopard was noted to live here.
